I would like to talk about Adult Type Atopic Dermatitis.　Atopic dermatitis is a very common disease in Japan.And it is known as a chronic itchy eczema which appears on whole body skin.Atopic dermatitis is predominantly a children’s disease, but the number of adult type atopic dermatitis cases has been increasing recently.Adult type atopic dermatitis cases only appear in Japan.We don’t know why so many of these cases exist only in Japan,But researchers continue to look for these answers.

Some years ago, one of my patients came back to Japan temporarily and said “I don’t want to live in Japan any more.”I was surprised and asked him “Why? You are a native Japanese, aren’t you?”And he answered “Because my skin condition gets worse when I’m in Japan.”I was sad to hear that, being Japanese myself.

Nowadays some atopic dermatitis patients go abroad and stay there for some years.
I noticed that almost all atopic dermatitis patients recover in foreign countries.For example, the USA, China, Australia, Europe and so on.Before they went abroad, I prescribed many kinds of ointments for these patients.When they were abroad, their skin condition got better without the use of those kinds of ointments.When they returned to Japan, however their skin condition got worse and they had to depend on those kinds of ointments again.

I have been thinking about the environmental differences between Japan and foreign countries.We Japanese had a tendency to burn many kinds of trash consisting of plastic bags, Styrofoam and other toxic materials.When burned at low temperature, these produce toxic dioxins which then enter our soil and water.Other chemicals which contribute to this pollution are environmental hormones, PCBs and so on.Japanese vegetables and fish contain these kinds of chemicals which may cause adult type atopic dermatitis.But in the larger countries like the USA and Australia, the vast land space allows them to bury their trash.So it’s not necessary to burn trash like Japan.

I also think Japanese people work very hard when in Japan.But in foreign countries workers don’t have these long work hours.Therefore Japanese workers are more likely to suffer from stress.Stress may also contribute to adult type atopic dermatitis in Japan.

There is also some speculation that agricultural chemicals used only in Japan may cause this disease.Unfortunately I don’t know much about these chemicals.So I can’t comment any further on them until more is known.

In conclusion so many adult type atopic dermatitis patients exist only in Japan.This is a big problem in Japanese Dermatology, So we Japanese dermatologists have to research and find the cause of this disease. However, this is proving to be very difficult. But through devotion and determination, we hope the cause of adult type atopic dermatitis will be understood in the near future.

For example: to improve the condition of hair, Polish women often use a decoction of nettles. It darkens slightly dark hair and nourishes. It contains many trace elements.
